Moving To London From Abroad

There are a number of decisions to make when relocating to London. The cost of living is extremely high in Central London, with rent charged at an average of in excess of £400 per week for a small one bedroomed flat.

The further away from Central London you move the lower the rent becomes. However, if you have to commute to work every day, you may find that the extra traveling costs outweigh the discount in the rent. It is up to you to make the best decision about this based on your circumstances.

It is a good idea to book a holiday to London before relocating to look at properties and find an appropriate location that suits your needs.

Shipping Your Possessions

One of the greatest causes of distress to people relocating to another country is damage to their possessions during transit. This could easily be avoided by taking a few small precautions when packing your possessions for shipping.

Take Your Time Packing

Never wait until the last minute to do your packing. Packing away an entire household's worth of possessions is a very arduous task and most people lose interest and start throwing things into boxes in any old order just to 'get the job done'. Unfortunately, this means that in transit, the contents shake and rattle around, and items get damaged.

Use Common Sense

When packing your boxes, always remember that one person will be carrying each box at some point. Put heavier items into small boxes, and light items into large boxes, to minimize the risk of anyone dropping your possessions during shipping.

Individually wrap fragile items

Ensure that all fragile items such as glassware and crockery are thoroughly wrapped in paper or bubble wrap and packed tightly into boxes. Always put plates on their side as laying them flat will cause the bottom plates to break under the weight. Use paper to line the remaining areas of the box and seal them with tape.

Finally, clearly mark the boxes with arrows pointing to the top your delicates should be secure for shipping.
